As a Payroll Controller you will be responsible for all aspects of processing a medium size (c850 employees) monthly payroll split by 3 legal entities (2 entities with up to 100 employees and 1 with approx. 650). The payroll processing is set up in the GlobalView ADP software, therefore good and extensive knowledge and use of payroll systems , especially GlobalView is significantly important for the performance of the duties in this role.

A strong all round payroll knowledge of the UK tax legislation, advanced payroll processes and experience in start to end payroll processing is expected / any experience in coordinating and/or controlling the processing of European payrolls will be a valuable and added service in this role. Experience in processing high volumes of data changes – starters/leavers/overtime, retail bonuses etc in monthly payrolls and liaison with third party providers is required.

We expect you to be a confident and independent worker, an expert in the role and to be able to navigate through the payroll processing with minimum level of supervision.

Previous experience of processing payroll for retail staff would be really beneficial as 40 % of the payroll processing will cover employees engaged in our retail division.

This is a 1 year fixed term contract



  • Ensure that payroll is processed in a timely manner
  • Act as principle contact with HMRC with regard to PAYE and NIC
  • Check and audit all payrolls to ensure legislative and awards compliance
  • Reconcile and balance monthly payroll accounts and submit reports
  • Raise payments
  • Deal effectively and competently with any payroll processing and tax related queries
  • Prepare salary reports to support forecasts and budgets
  • Work with the HR team and the Data / Reward Analyst as required
  • Manage SAP-based payroll systems and suggests changes/upgrades as and when required


  • Liaise with Finance – Account Management and Accounts \Payable reference to personnel costs
  • Production of month end reports and journals and reconciliation of the payroll control accounts
  • Prepare ad hoc reports
  • Support the preparation of annual Payroll budget and costings


  • Strong UK Payroll experience (start to finish) / any EMEA experience would be a bonus
  • Previous working experience in a similar role with sole responsibility for Payroll
  • Payroll reporting and journal production experience
  • Strong Excel skills (Vlookup, Pivot table)
  • CIPP qualification (desirable)
  • Good communication skills and strong attention to detail
