Senior R&D Synthesis Chemist

Kao Specialties Americas LLC (KSA) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Kao Corporation, Tokyo, Japan. The majority of the global product lines are based on surface-active agents or "surfactant" chemistries. KSA is a specialty chemicals manufacturing company with three major business segments (1) Oleo Chemicals, (2) Performance Chemicals and (3) Specialty Chemicals including Imaging Materials and Aroma Chemicals.

Responsibilities

KSA is currently recruiting for a Senior Synthesis Chemist, based in High Point, NC facility. This is a challenging, individual contributor position for a large chemical processing facility. Daily essential duties include:

  • Applying chemical knowledge for a variety of organic methodologies including alkoxylation, esterification, and radical polymerization
  • Product development work from ideation through product scale up and production
  • Work to resolve tough laboratory and production challenges including kilogram-scale synthesis of organic small molecule and polymer products
  • Assist in the determination of regulatory status of new products
  • Independently manage multiple long range synthesis projects to include raw material procurement and evaluation, process development, and cost feasibility
  • Conduct analyses to determine product purity, and reaction completion
  • Generate data for SDS preparation
  • Oversee technology transfers to production

Qualifications

Candidates for this position must have:

  • Bachelor's Degree (Chemistry) with three to five years of relevant lab experience beyond the university level with organic chemistry and polymerization
  • Demonstrated ability to write reports, laboratory procedures and customer communications
  • Experience in presenting laboratory information to various audiences including management and customers
  • Experience in training others in laboratory techniques and methodology

The ideal candidate would also have the following skills:

  • Master's degree or PhD. in Polymer Chemistry or related discipline

Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. Ability to stand for up to 8 hours is required. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, working overhead and climbing all day. The employee must frequently lift and/or move items over 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Must be certified medically fit to wear respirator. Incumbent may be required to work in conditions where hazardous material and /or toxic fumes could be present.
